The Space Research Laboratory (SRL) was founded in the end of 1980's. Laboratory has its roots in the preceding 30-year activities of the Cosmic Ray Research Group of the Wihuri Physical Laboratory. The objectives of the laboratory are to explore space physics, particularly solar and heliospheric physics related to energetic particles, and to develop instrumentation for the research.

To support the research goals, SRL offers basic and graduate education within the framework of the University. SRL is also a member in the Finnish Graduate School in Astronomy and Space Physics.

The present staff of the Space Research Laboratory consists of two professors, two post doctoral scientists, seven graduate students, and five undergraduate students.
